70th Anniversary Operation Avalanche – The sea tells the History

September 7: start our 3 days to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Allied landings.

Our special guest Folco Quilici: with the help of movies, he spoke of warships, planes, tanks and armored hulls still submerged in the Gulf of Salerno.

To introduce, a projection of 12 minutes of the documentary “The landing forgotten“, made by directors Marcello Adamo (member of the “Gruppo operativo subacqueo Salerno“) and Raffaele Brunetti, produced by the “National Geographic“.

The speakers were the judge Angelo Frattini, the commissioner of Naples Luigi Merolla, the historian Nicola Oddati, Carlo Leggieri, official supervision, and Alberto Senatore, President of “Ecomuseo Marittimo di Salerno“, with which we are already on a fruitful collaboration.

Among others, the admirals Giuliano Manzari and Franco Prosperi who told us of the sinking of the submarine “Velella“, which took place September 7, 1943 by a torpedo from the British submarine “Shakespeare” and the battle, still unknown to most people, fought by sailors of the resistance against the Germans at Capo d’Orso, on the Amalfi to defend a major radio station.

The day ended with the laying of a wreath in the waters of the Gulf of Salerno, in memory of the fallen soldiers during the landing.
